Do you try to break it into the squares keeping the crackers intact or do you just go to town breaking it? And I know this is specific, but do you lay the crackers salt side down or up? I would think down might be good so you get more of that salty taste? :) Sounds yummy!!

I try to break it into the squares and it usually breaks pretty easy! I’ve only done them salt side up…but you should give it a try doing salt side down! That would be yummy to have more of a salty taste!

This recipe doesn’t work for me. The toffee spreads to thin after baking and then choc chips melt INTO the toffee and are not spreadable… Any suggestions?

You might not have pushed your saltines close enough together, maybe try putting them closer. And try letting it cook a minute before you add the chocolate chips! Hope that helps!

Thank you. I think they were too spread out. I ended up cooking the choc chips for a minute and the. They spread a little better. The end result was not perfect but definitely still delicious! Luckily that was my practice batch and now with a little more confidence I am making them again time for thanksgiving. I am putting m&m’s and pretzels bits on the top :)

I tried this last weekend…I let it cool for hours and I basically made caramel. Toffee is supposed to be hard, right? Did I over boil? Under boil? It was good but oh so messy!

Hmmm…it is supposed to be harder! I would try baking it a little longer and then refrigerating it longer! I hope that helps! :)

Oh, I had this problem too! It still tastes good, but the toffee didn’t harden. I worried I’d underboiled it (I actually burned the first batch by overboiling it!). Thanks for clearing that up! I’ll have to bake it an extra minute next time!

Hi Ele! It is quite delicious. Not sure who was the first to call it that but it’s always stuck. I think it is more named that because when you pick it up you crack it into pieces. Enjoy!

Does this freeze well?

I’ve never tried freezing it, but I would probably recommend eating it within a few days!

Mine didn’t turn out very well, the toffee was so soft I had trouble breaking it and most of the m&m’s fell off/broke off.

I’m sorry you had trouble with it Shirley. I would try cooking the toffee mixture a little longer and putting them m&ms on sooner so they have time for the chocolate to melt on them. It may be different depending on the altitude! Hope it works better next time!

Love, love, love the toffee bars (crack) lol but mine didn’t break so evenly and although they taste great they don’t look great? Any hints on how to get them to break better and more even? Should I use a knife? Should I not overlap crackers? THanks for sharing this great recipe!

Hmmm…I usually will run a knife over it and then break it with my hands. I don’t overlap them, so you could try that to see if it looks better! Hope that helps!! :)

I tried this today and it is definitely crack! The only thing I couldn’t get was how to harden the chocolate. Even after it being in the fridge for 1 hour, the chocolate melts instantly when I touch it so it’s all over our fingers. Any tips on how to harden the chocolate properly or what I’m doing wrong? Weird, that has never happened to me before! Hmm..I used Nestle chocolate chips, maybe try using a different kind of chocolate!

The first time I made it, I think I didn’t boil it long enough. The recipe I used said the toffee should start to pull away from the pan when it’s ready. It didn’t the first time and that batch never got hard enough. The bottom was messy. The next batch (thank goodness for the practice batches) was perfect and it did start to pull away on the sides. Mine didn’t look as pretty. I used club crackers because I heard they tasted better.

I’m glad it worked for you the second time! It is always a little hard to know when the toffee is ready in the pan. It definitely takes a little practice to get it perfect!

I made these tonight for a cookie exchange and they’re delicious. I forgot the M&M’s but they weren’t missed. Once the chocolate was hard I flipped them over on to a cutting board and was able to cut them into equal portions using the cracker as a guide. I can’t wait to share them with my friends at our Christmas party tomorrow. P.S. I followed the directions to a T (minus the M&M’S) and they turned out perfectly.

Revision……. My first batch I let cool in the refrigerator just until the chocolate set. I don’t know if it was the time I let it set but it was very easy to cut into equal portions. The second batch I made and went to bed while they cooled. In the morning I tried to cut them like the other batch and they were so hard they shattered and broke into very uneven pieces. I’m not sure if it’s because they set over night or maybe the toffee was coked a little longer than the original batch. They’re still delicious no matter the shape. However, next time to appease my OCD I will cut them the same night :)

My daughter makes this recipe all the time. It is the best. I decided to give it a go this year and it turned out great. Only problem is that it DOSENT last long enough for gift giving. It barely makes it to day two. My family LOVES it way to much. LOL. Me thinks me will be making a few mor batches before Christmas for gift giving. Hands off family!

I’m kinda glad to see that I wasn’t the only one with the issue of the toffee not hardening…are we supposed to let the toffee come to a rolling boil and then start stirring constantly for 3 min? Or is it just a matter of cooking it once it’s poured over the crackers?

The recipe says 50 crackers, my pan holds 25 so do you add a double layer in the pan?

You could try using 2 pans or a bigger pan, I don’t like to do a double layer because they don’t come out as pretty! Hope they turn out yummy! :)

Exactly how much butter is two sticks?

I seriously laughed out loud (and showed my husband) when I saw that you also call this recipe “Christmas Crack.” I’ve been making this toffee recipe for many years now, and not long after the first time I made it I labeled it the very same thing, Christmas Crack! Because once you have had one piece, you are immediately hooked! It is amazing and I make it every year. Thanks for sharing!

These are amazing!!!! Instead of candy or nuts I use mini marshmallows on top. I also use a pizza wheel to cut them, so much easier than a knife!!!!

I have made these before and one thing I did was crisp up the saltines in the oven first . It helps to hold up the toffee.

I made a second batch and sprinkled coconut over the toffee. Mixture before putting it in the oven. Then I put 1 1/2 cups of butterscotch chips on top along with about 3/4 cup f chocolate chips. Gives a marble look. Instead of peanuts, I used chopped pecans.

Hi Gina! This is Laura, the Community Manager – I eat gluten-free and I’ve found some “Glutino Table Crackers Gluten Free — 7 oztable crackers” that are a good substitute for Saltines. They don’t have as much salt on them, but you could sprinkle some between the toffee and chocolate layers to mimic the salty/sweet combo more.

I am from Australia and have never seen this recipe before so I tried it today. I made a mistake over lapping the crackers and didn’t work quick enough when applying the toffee BUT I covered it in a load of chocolate and it looks great. Waiting by the fridge to try it. I have made this for years, only I use white sugar instead of the brown sugar and it is always wonderful, so either will work. I did laugh at the line “will stay fresh for 1-2 weeks”. hahahaha – it doesn’t last more than one or two DAYS at my house!

It should be firm, but not hurt your teeth firm. :)

Made Christmas crack & used m&m on top. Place in freezer for 30 minutes & the m&m lost their gloss. How do I keep that from happening?

I’m not sure – I haven’t had that happen before. I would think either the m&ms were a bit old (it’s so hard to find the “best by” dates on those packages!) or your freezer temperature is off (but if you aren’t having any issues with ice or frozen foods, then I wouldn’t think it’s that).

I have just tried this…….I’m in Australia, so for those of you playing at home….I used Saladas as the biscuit.

Hi! I’m Laura, the Community Manager, and my family and I have a lot of food allergies – so I can definitely say YES! to the gluten-free crackers (I added a sprinkle more of salt when I made it) and YES! to the coconut palm sugar.

As for the vegan butter – that I don’t know. Fake butters have water and oil, and don’t function like butter when cooked. I think coconut oil would be a better substitute but even that might not work out properly. I cannot think of any substitute that I can definitely say “try this instead of the butter and it will work.”

Can you make these with a buttery cracker like Ritz?

Awesome Recipe. I topped one batch with crushed Starlight mints (green & white spearmint candies); deLISH!!! It was fun and festive with the green & white color contrast to the chocolate which also added a bright fresh punch to a sweet, rich treat.

“Stays fresh 1-2 weeks”… As if it actually goes uneaten that long! Lol!

It depends on what size you break them into – I think you could make 50 work!

I am currently making these and my toffee did not harden! Did I do something wrong? I have flipped the pan and peeled off the foil and threw it back in the freezer with hopes that this will help! Also the toffee seems to be a bit salty. Did you use unsalted butter?

The toffee shouldn’t be too hard – it is breakable but when you bit into it, it’s more soft than you’d think.

Regarding the saltiness, some butters have more salt than others, so I’d try unsalted. :)

I made these today, they were so good! My only question is for some reason the m and m’s faded a lot in color, so they look like Easter colors! Any idea what I did wrong?

I’ve heard from a few people that the m&ms are fading in the freezer, and I’m really not certain why. :(

I thought it might have to do with the age of the m&ms (it’s difficult to find their “best by date” on the packaging), but I’m not really certain. Did you cover it in the freezer then bring it to room temperature still covered? If so, maybe the condensation of coming to room temp did it?

Ok these don’t need to stay fresh 1-2 weeks because they don’t last that long! The only thing I did differently was to put the pan back into the oven after pouring the choc chips – this helped them melt more quickly and made spreading a breeze (I turned the oven off – be careful not to overheat or the choc will seize). About 45 secs was perfect. I topped mine with pecans as I didn’t want to add more chocolate – YUM!

As for the m&m’s loosing their sheen – I don’t know the science behind it, but the extreme and quick temp change (going from hot/warm to FREEZER) and for too long will cause them to become dull. So my suggestion would be to leave the toffee with the m&m’s at room temp for a few minutes and then use the fridge. If you use the freezer ( need quick turn-around time), be careful not to leave them too long (recipe says 30 mins, try not to exceed that) and the m&m’s *should* keep thier gloss.

OH! MY! GOODNESS! My friend brought this to a Christmas party and I could not keep myself from eating an embarrassing amount haha so much that she made me my own little tin of it for Christmas, loved it even more than the first time around so naturally I had to take to Pinteret to find out how to make it! THANK YOU! I had a friend pop in when I was melting my butter/sugar on med.low. so I am not sure how long it had been going for and I didn’t stir it at all…oops but dumped and spread just fine, didn’t have chocolate chips but did have left over almond bark so I did a half chocolate have white almond bark, its 1) beautiful and 2) amazingly delicious and if hasn’t even cooled yet haha thanks again!

Great recipe. This stuff is awesome. I’ve made a few minor changes, however:

1) Used graham crackers instead of saltines; they make the finished product crunchy instead of chewy.

2) Used mini baking M&Ms for the topping.

3) Added slivered almonds with the M&Ms

4) Added Reese’s Pieces or peanut butter chips to the toppings.

A pan won’t fit in my side by side freezer. Can I put in the fridge?

I made this for my entire side of the family while in VA as their gift from us. All of the batches worked like perfection. Then I came home to GA and started making the batches for my hubsters side of the family and for some reason the first batch I made turned out all sorts of crazy. The toffee came out of the oven grainy and pulled away from the cracker when I tried to spread the chocolate. I made my second batch and, shockingly, it was absolute perfection. The only difference between batch 1 and batch 2, batch 1 was made with store brand butter and batch 2 with Land O’ Lakes. Never again will I laugh at my mom when she tells me all butters aren’t created equal. Lol.

My husband has Saturday AND Sunday off this week so I’m hoping to squeeze in a date night. ;) You know what else I’ll be doing… making more Christmas crack. You are going to want to put this recipe on your MUST MAKE list this year because it is seriously amazing. It takes SWEET and SALTY to a whole new level. The best part? One of my favorite Christmas desserts and it only takes about 15 minutes to make!

This recipe should be familiar to you. I’m sure many of you that have awesome grandma’s have tried this recipe before. ;) I shared my grandma’s saltine cracker toffee over the summer and this is just a glorified version. In my opinion everything tastes better with chocolate and the M&M’s make it so festive. You could also top your Christmas crack with crushed saltines, sea salt, toasted coconut, slivered almonds, pecans or heath bits.

Christmas toffee


50 saltine crackers (approx.)

2 sticks (1 cup) butter, cubed

1 cup soft light brown sugar, packed

2 cups chocolate chips

1/2 to 1 cup M&M's, chopped nuts or sliced almonds


Pre-heat oven to 325°F.

Line a large jelly roll pan with aluminum foil. Spray the foil with non-stick cooking spray and then line the pan with saltine crackers.

Place the butter and sugar in a medium sized pot over low medium-low heat. Stir until the butter is melted. Once the butter has melted, bring to a boil for 2-3 minutes. Stir constantly.

Once it's nice and bubbly, remove pan from heat and pour evenly over saltine crackers. Spread mixture with a knife... however it doesn't have to be perfect. Try to move fast during this part so the toffee doesn't harden.

Place pan in the oven and bake for 6-8 minutes. The mixture will spread evenly over the crackers as it bakes.

Remove pan from oven and then sprinkle the chocolate chips on top of the toffee while it's still hot. Let the chocolate chips melt for a few minutes and then spread all over the toffee with a spatula. Sprinkle M&M's (or nuts) on top and then place in the freezer for 30 minutes. Once chocolate has hardened break pieces off the foil and in an container. It will stay fresh for 1 - 2 weeks.

I printed mine out on sticker paper (found on Amazon) and then punched it out with a 2inch circle punch. You could also cut it in a square and put a hole punch in the top and tie it on with ribbon or twine.
